About Me

Hello there!

My name is Kyle Sutherland. I’m an IELTS Coach and English language instructor who’s been teaching for over five years.

I am a Canadian native English speaker with experience teaching learners of all ages, both in groups and individually. I have taught English in Canada, China, and Japan and now I’ve decided to extend my teaching services to the world through my website, Excel at ESL.

My passion for language began during my time at the University of Toronto (U of T) where I studied English Language Linguistics. There I also discovered Latin, which started my fascination with language that has continued to this day. During my time in university, I learned about second language acquisition and effective language teaching/learning techniques. My time at U of T gave me a unique perspective and invaluable skills that I continue to use in my job to this day.

Experience

After I graduated University in 2016, I went to teach English conversation, IELTS, TOEFL, and the SAT in China. I taught in a city called Handan at the #1 high school in the Heibei province. My students were between the ages of 14 – 18. It was in China that I first taught IELTS and found that I really enjoyed test prep coaching. One of the most satisfying aspects of my job is helping smart, motivated people achieve their goals.

When I left China, I went to Japan where I currently live in Tokyo. Here, I have taught executives from various Japanese businesses and government agencies including, the Bank of Japan, Casio Computers, Metawater CO., LTD, UD Trucks. As well as members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

Additionally, I teach learners from all over the world online.

My career has blessed me with the opportunity to work with learners of all ages and backgrounds. This has given me a wide perspective on language teaching and learning and the chance to meet hundreds of interesting, driven people.

Teaching Philosophy

My goal is to empower my students through entertaining and interesting lessons. Legacy language teaching techniques are not only boring but ineffective. There is no reason why you cannot find language learning enjoyable. This is what I strive to provide for my students.

As a language learner myself, I understand the techniques my students need to achieve their language goals. I am currently a student of Japanese, Latin, and German; I have achieved varying levels of proficiency in each.

My students will learn the best ways to take charge of their own learning and find enjoyable ways to improve their English skills. My main goal is to give you the motivation and confidence you need to succeed.

IELTS Coaching

I have helped hundreds of students reach their IELTS test goals. One of the most satisfying parts of my job is working with intelligent, motivated people and helping them reach their goal of living or studying abroad.

During my IELTS lessons, I strive to provide my students with information that will not only help them during their IELTS test, but my students will learn information they can take away with them after their test. You will learn things you can use to improve your general English ability too.

My main goal with my IELTS students is to help you finish IELTS and start living your life again.

Personal Life

In my spare time, I spend a lot of it learning languages too. I currently study Japanese, German, and Latin. My experiences with these languages have taught me personally about the struggles faced by language learners.

Additionally, another of my hobbies is computer science. Last year in February 2019, I studied for and passed the Cisco Certified Network Associate exam. I did this for my own personal development. It was a great challenge and it taught me a lot about the internet and computer networking.

In my spare time, I work with Python, BASH, HTML5/CSS, Javascript, x86 Assembly, and Linux system administration.
